Top 10: Best Dark Themes For Visual Studio Code in 2020

I'm sure that there are a lot of developers out there that don't want to get sore eyes from working the whole day with a light-themed IDE. Personally, even the dishes in my home are black, my table is black, my office is dark thanks to a blackout in the Window because you know, too much light is annoying. I love to share how to customize the IDE's with custom themes, for example, I wrote recently how to use a dark theme in NetBeans here.

The default Dark+ Theme In Visual Studio Code is alright, however lacks your personal taste! You may like a mix between some cream or ivory colors while keeping a dark background. That's why the code editor is quite customizable and there are a lot of themes out there that I'd recommend you to test.

In this top, I will share with you 10 of the most beautiful dark themes to install in Visual Studio Code.

10. Github Dark Theme

9. Sublime Dark Material Theme

Sublime Material is a port to align the style of the theme with the default VSCode chrome that cannot be changed atm.

8. SynthWave '84

Synthwave 84 VSCode Theme

Do you remember that endless summer back in '84? Cruising down the ocean-highway with the top down, the wind in our hair and heads buzzing with neon dreams? No, I don't remember it either, but with this experimental theme, we can go there. This colour scheme is influenced by the music and the cover artwork of modern Synthwave bands like FM-84, Timecop 1983 and The Midnight. By association, that means I've also taken heavy influence from the excellent retro-tinged artwork of James White (check out his work, it's awesome).

7. Palenight Theme

Palenight VSCode Theme

Palenight is an elegant and juicy material-inspired theme for Visual Studio Code. This theme uses minimal contrast across the first three variants, but if you feel like the workbench could use a bit more, there's an experimental mild contrast variant under the name Palenight (Mild Contrast).

6. Monokai Pro

Monokai VS Code Theme

Monokai Pro is a color scheme, customized user interface theme, and complete icon set for Visual Studio Code. It has been designed by the author of the original Monokai colors. Carefully selected shades of colors are the foundation of an uncompromising, non-distractive user interface. The single goal of Monokai Pro is to let you focus on your code. The icons of Monokai Pro have all been created from scratch to ensure they are easily recognizable on small sizes in the side bar. They are designed to help you quickly find the right files in your project.
