Are We Becoming Too Dependent on AI?

Are We Becoming Too Dependent on AI?

Ever since ChatGPT was launched, we’ve seen a boom when it comes to AI being integrated in pretty much every single thing out there. And the reality is that AI has become a major part of our lives, whether we like it or not. It has changed the way we work, the way we study things, connect with other people and so on. Now the question is, are we becoming too reliant on AI or not? Understanding that and knowing AI’s limits is important, as that will help us better focus on how to live our future and use AI for growth.

AI Can Be Great for Many Use Cases

These days, we always need assistance with all kinds of stuff. As life becomes way more complex and challenging, we need to find ways to figure out where to go next, and how to better adjust to the situation at hand. AI is going to make you more productive, since you can easily handle work faster, identify issues, and narrow everything down to the best of your capabilities.

At first glance, nothing here seems harmful or anything like that. Instead, it can be a great tool that you use to do your work and improve your life. The issue arises when you rely too much on AI and you don’t have your own input. AI is great for initial drafts and toolkits, but it’s not going to deliver flawless projects. It still has a variety of issues, so you have to narrow everything down and identify an effective way of managing the process coherently.

Assistance VS Over-Reliance

As we said, getting assistance from AI is a great thing. It’s why AI was made in the first place, to allow us to spend less time working and more time enjoying our experience. The reality is that you continually want to use AI in order to speed up your workflow, enhance your existing work, or maybe even brainstorm things that you did not have an idea about.

However, AI produces options, yet it shouldn’t be the one to take decisions without your accountability. You are the one that needs to control AI and use it to work for you. If you over-rely on AI and let it do anything, then your role, usefulness and contribution gets diminished.

Unfortunately, there are lots of people that continue doing their work again and again without them worrying about anything. AI doesn’t have all the knowledge, it can’t replace your expertise, so it will automatically have all kinds of mistakes. If you don’t care about that, then it’s obviously going to be a problem. But at the end of the day, the most important thing here is to understand how to work, where to draw the line, and continue pushing the boundaries as much as possible.

What Happens When We Are Outsourcing Our Thinking?

That’s the main issue, some people tend to rely too much on AI and when we do that, things tend to be pretty problematic. Some tasks can benefit from our knowledge and expertise. It’s not going to be something complex at first, but it will help make things better in the long term if we use our own expertise in order to outsource everything to AI.

AI can perform a lot of steps the way they should normally be handled, but still, you will end up with a variety of potential challenges that arise, because it can’t develop the skills you already possess. That being said, you can still use AI in order to complete tasks that would be very easy to do and which take time.

The important thing is to understand where AI can be used and how you can take advantage of it. These days, the crucial focus is on the process at hand, and how you are making the most out of it. Research on generative AI and critical thinking is developing, but studies still show that having reliance on AI can lead to lower critical thinking. You want to have active oversight and information literacy, as that will protect you against that entire process.

You don’t need to panic, as there are things to focus on and ways to use AI that are not very alarming. The crucial thing is to narrow down processes, figure out where to go next, and how you can adjust stuff in order to make it work the way it should. If a task is central for learning and improving yourself as a person, don’t outsource it to AI. Sure, you might say it’s easy to do and why not do that, but it’s not as simple.

Instead of accessing that growth opportunity, you will end up with issues and that is certainly going to be extremely challenging. The most important thing is to understand how everything works, where you need AI and then use it to the best of your capabilities. Using AI is necessary in many use cases, especially when it comes to work these days. And guess what, it can actually help you in more ways than you might expect. It can be challenging when you rely too much on it, but at the end of the day, it’s totally worth it, and exactly what you need to keep in mind.

AI is useful, but we need to understand that we shouldn’t rely solely on it. AI is still prone to errors, it’s not perfect, and it lacks the human comprehension, emotion and expertise that we can provide. Yes, it certainly has its own challenges, but we need to learn how to take advantage of AI and what it provides, while also pushing the boundaries in a creative and unique manner.
