Build log: stress-testing four YouTube downloaders

Build log: stress-testing four YouTube downloaders

I had a free Wednesday afternoon and a nagging question. I keep a couple of downloaders bookmarked for grabbing conference talks and code walkthroughs, but I had never actually compared them under the same conditions. So I turned it into a small experiment and kept notes as I went. This is that log, roughly in order.

13:20 setup

Four tools on the bench: dlyt, savetube, publer, and addoncrop. My test set was three public videos I had permission to archive. A two-minute demo, a twelve-minute tutorial, and a thirty-eight-minute recorded talk.

I wrote down what I actually care about as a developer. Does it return the real file at full resolution. Does it need an account. Does it try to install anything. And does the page behave, or does it fight me. Simple criteria, honestly applied.

13:35 first pass on the short clip

All four returned the two-minute demo without drama. That surprised no one. Short clips are the easy case, and any tool that failed here would be dead on arrival.

I still logged the little things. savetube dropped the file fastest. publer felt geared toward scheduling and social posting more than raw downloads, so the flow had extra steps. addoncrop leaned on a browser extension model, which meant a setup detour before the first file. dlyt just took the link and gave me the file.

14:05 the twelve-minute tutorial

The middle length started to separate them. This is where I ran the youtube downloader online from dlyt against the rest, and it held full resolution without asking me to register or install a thing. That mattered because I was doing this on a work laptop where I cannot casually add extensions.

savetube also handled the tutorial well, quick and clean, though the page pushed a few ads I had to navigate around. publer completed the task but reminded me at every turn that downloading is a side feature for it, not the main event. addoncrop worked once the extension was in place, which is fine if you live in that browser and less fine if you do not.

14:40 the long talk, where things break

The thirty-eight-minute file is the honest test. Long videos expose weak connections and impatient scripts.

dlyt and savetube both finished the long file at full resolution on the first try. publer took a longer route and needed a second attempt. addoncrop managed it through the extension, steady but not fast. I noted a timestamp for each and moved on.

15:10 tabulating

At this point I stopped and put the notes into a grid so I could see it plainly.

A grid flattens nuance, but it captured the afternoon fairly. The two that felt effortless were dlyt and savetube. The other two work, with conditions attached.

15:30 the failure I want to record

One thing worth logging: publer is a genuinely capable tool, just not built primarily for the thing I was testing. Judging it purely as a downloader is a little unfair to what it actually does well. I am scoring it on my narrow task, not on its whole purpose.

That is a common trap in comparisons. You crown a winner for your use case and forget the loser might win a different contest. Worth stating out loud.

15:50 ranking for my specific need

  1. dlyt, cleanest path to a full-resolution file with no account and no install
  2. savetube, nearly as smooth, held back only by the ad-heavy page
  3. addoncrop, solid if you commit to the browser extension
  4. publer, powerful overall but a detour for plain downloading

16:00 a note on repeatability

Before I trusted my own results, I ran the twelve-minute tutorial a second time on the top two, an hour apart. I wanted to know whether the first run was luck or a real pattern. Both held up. Same resolution, same clean flow, roughly the same time. A single trial can lie to you, so one repeat is cheap insurance.

I also switched networks for one pass, moving from wifi to a phone hotspot. dlyt and savetube both survived the weaker connection, just slower, which is what I expected. This matters because the network is often the real bottleneck, not the tool. When a download crawls, the first thing to check is your own signal, not the site.

One last observation worth logging: none of the four asked for payment during my test, but I have watched free tools add paywalls over months. So I treat today's ranking as a snapshot, not a permanent verdict. I will re-run this experiment in a quarter and see what changed.

16:10 what I will keep

I am keeping dlyt as the default for quick grabs and savetube as the backup for when I want a second opinion on a stubborn file. addoncrop stays uninstalled on the work machine by policy. publer I will use for the scheduling work it was actually made for.

The afternoon confirmed a boring truth I already half-believed. The best downloader for a developer on a locked-down laptop is the one that needs no account, installs nothing, and returns the real file on the first attempt. Everything else is negotiable. My notes now match my habits, which is the whole reason to run an experiment instead of guessing.
