How to Automate Dev Team Rewards with Slack

How to Automate Dev Team Rewards with Slack

Setting up an automated rewards program in Slack is an excellent way to acknowledge your Dev team's hard work. Instead of manually tracking performance, which can lead to inconsistency, these reward systems use existing code tools to automatically "notice" when someone does a great job and trigger instant rewards in Slack.

In this guide, you'll learn how to build a relevant reward system for developers that's simple and equitable.

Select Employee Gifts

When brainstorming scalable corporate gifting programs, the physical gifts come first. Start by browsing a catalog that supports bulk ordering and tiered pricing, so you can map real products to each reward level before you configure anything in Slack. Your bot is only as good as the gift it's delivering.

For example, when a new hire completes a training milestone, your Slack bot can present a curated menu of physical gift options tied to that tier, like desk accessories, branded drinkware, or something fun like a Squishy Dumpling Stress Reliever waiting on their desk the next morning. That tangible moment is what makes the recognition stick.

Build a Reward Points Structure

Feel free to get creative with your reward points structure. In fact, you could think of this reward system like an arcade!

Whenever an engineer does a great job on their code, the "arcade" logs the action, issues points, and updates the employee's points balance. The Slack bot (called "Slackbot") then messages the employee with a congratulations message.

The engineer in the scenario can check their balance on a rewards page that showcases a live list of rewards with point thresholds.

Define Reward Actions

To keep your reward system fair and equitable, define reward actions and point allotments that help the entire team. For example, you could issue points when someone completes a code, but also reward points to the team member who reviews the code. This structure can help maintain momentum and keep projects moving forward.

Consider establishing point pools for teams to encourage group progress, not just individual performance. When a product goes live in a testing environment without breaking, a rewards bot would automatically update the pool balance. These rewards could also be experiential, like escape rooms or free Comic-Con tickets.

How to Manage Rewards Points

Consider building out a master digital log that captures your team's points in real time. This log could connect to each person's GitHub account and Slack username. When a developer performs a rewarded action, the system would log the following information:

  • Reason for the reward
  • Unique number for the code update
  • Time and date of the action
  • Employee's name

Of course, periodic manual review is needed to ensure the system remains equitable. You may also discover more actions that deserve to be rewarded. Plus, if the same code update gets logged twice by accident, you can configure the master log to cancel it to avoid issuing double points.

You'll also need a prize tracker that logs employees' choice prizes, shipping statuses, and delivery dates.

Create the Slack Experience

Since you'll be communicating and celebrating reward points on Slack, think of unique ways to use the platform. Slack is built for creative collaboration. For instance, you could configure your Slack bot to send humorous, celebratory memes and GIFs to employees' DMs when they've earned points.

Slack allows you to create different channels. A lighthearted "party" channel could be a place where Devs go to congratulate each other.

Developers could also claim their prizes through Slack. Configure a prize redemption command. When an employee has enough points, they can type "/redeem" to trigger a bot with a menu of reward options.

Keep Your Dev Team Motivated

Automating rewards ensures your recognition system remains consistent and relevant. Keep a fresh inventory of prizes, clarify your points structure, set reward actions, build out a master points log, and customize Slack with special channels, commands, and celebratory messages.
